Four things to do this rainy-ish week

April is usually a rainy month for Victoria, BC. This year, we need it more than ever. This last March was the driest on record with BC’s capital receiving only 11.3 mm of rain compared to an average of 78.4 mm. April 7th week’s forecast of *most* of the wet stuff is welcome, at least for me. But what to do if you’re not a fan?

If you’re wanting to stay inside from the rain, here’s a short list of things to do.

  1. Do your taxes (if you want to yourself): It’s tax season, and if you’re up for a challenge (and wanting to save money), tackle your taxes either online, or if you’re old-fashioned, on paper while the weather waters the earth.
  2. Sidney Literary Festival: With literary superstars like Esi Edugyan, Lorna Crozier, and Susan Juby among others, take in the April 11-14 festival’s literary discussions, readings and Saturday breakfast? I might just check it out.
  3. Catch a play: If you can, take in one of Victoria’s many stage performances to escape the rain. Starting this week at the Belfry is 4000 Miles, a cross-generational story about grief, growing up, and family. 4. Bring out the old board games: Give Netflix a break and fire up those old neurons pulling out games like Scrabble, Uno, or even Snakes and Ladders. Make it quality time with the family, or a fun get-together with friends. Best of all, it gives our eyes off our ever-present screens.
